PLAYED AT: Evraz Place

GAME NOTES: FILLION, DAVID LEAD QUEBEC TO OPENING WIN WENDY GRAVES REGINA, Sask. – Quebec came out firing, scoring twice in the first four minutes, and never looked back, defeating Alberta 6-2 in the first game for both teams at the 2016 National Women’s Under-18 Championship. Alice Fillion (Québec, Que./Limoilou, CEGEP) and Gabrielle David (Drummondville, Que./Limoilou, CEGEP) led the way with two goals each. David also added an assist. Rosalie Demers (Blainville, Que./Stanstead College, CAHS) and Tamara Thiérus (St-Jérôme, Que./Stanstead College, CAHS) also scored for Quebec. Édith D’Astous-Moreau (Laval, Que./Nepean, PWHL), last year’s Top Goaltender, picked up the win. Only 1:38 in Fillion cleanly beat Camryn Drever (Edmonton, Alta./St. Albert, ABMAAA) with a wrist shot from the high slot. Just 2:30 later she took an outlet pass from Alexie Guay (Magog, Que./Stanstead College, CAHS) and rifled in a shot from just inside the face-off circle. Quebec nearly made it 3-0 when Amy Landry (Beaconsfield, Que./Dawson College, CEGEP) got sprung on a breakaway, but Drever came up big to keep the early deficit to two. Less than a minute later Stephanie Markowksi (Edmonton, Alta./St. Albert, ABMAAA) scored from the point to put Alberta on the board on the power play. David restored the two-goal lead 1:34 later, when she fought off a defender to take a centering pass from Marie-Camille Théorêt (Magog, Que./Champlain-Lennoxville, CEGEP) and slide the puck under Drever. The lead grew to three thanks to a late goal just before the second intermission. Off a neutral zone-off face-off, David went strong to the net; Demers scored on the rebound with 11 seconds left in the period. Quebec all but iced it early in the third. Three minutes in David picked the puck off an Alberta player in the neutral zone, skated in alone and scored from the slot. Just 1:11 later Thiérus put in a rebound in front to put Quebec up five. Alberta scored once more thanks to a great individual effort by Dara Greig (Lethbridge, Alta./Pursuit of Excellence, CSSHL) midway through the final period. Greig fought off a defender along the side boards, drove toward the net and scored short side from the bottom of the face-off circle.
