GAME NOTES: BLUE SCORES TWICE IN THIRD, EDGES YELLOW FOR FIRST DEV CAMP WIN JASON LA ROSE CALGARY, Alta. – Catherine Dubois (Charlesbourg, Que./Limoilou, CEGEP) had a goal and an assist in the third period, leading Blue to a 2-1 win over Yellow on Saturday for its first win at Canada’s National Women’s Development Team selection camp. The victory allowed Blue to avoid the three-game intrasquad sweep; Yellow took the first two games of the series, 3-1 on Tuesday and 4-1 on Friday. Kristyn Capizzano (Oakville, Ont./Boston College, HE) had the game-winning goal for Blue, which trailed 1-0 and was outshot 21-9 through two periods, but found a way to win. Karly Heffernan (Sherwood Park, Alta./Pursuit of Excellence, JWHL) was the lone goal scorer for Yellow. The offences were quiet early, with the teams combining for just 11 shots, and no goals, in the opening 20 minutes. Yellow picked up the pace in the second but was turned away time and time again by Blue goaltender Ann-Renée Desbiens (La Malbaie, Que./University of Wisconsin, WCHA), who stopped all 15 shots she faced in her 30 minutes of work. It took until the 15:48 mark of the second period for the first goal to be scored; Heffernan streaked down the right wing and slipped a backhand through the five-hole of Kimberly Newell (Burnaby, B.C./Princeton University, ECAC), who had replaced Desbiens at the game’s midway mark. Blue tied it 4:26 into the third when Dubois barely stayed onside at the blue-line before taking a pass from Victoria Bach (Milton, Ont./Mississauga, PWHL), cutting into the slot and snapping a shot past the blocker of Jaimie Leonoff (Montreal, Que./Yale University, ECAC). The first lead for Blue came just 3:17 later, with Capizzano parked at the side of the net to bang in a Dubois pass. Bach was also in on the go-ahead goal, her second assist of the period. Yellow’s best chance to tie came in the final minutes, when it enjoyed a six-on-four advantage for 1:45, but couldn’t find a way to beat Newell and the Blue defence. It managed just two shots on the long power play. Newell finished with 14 saves on 15 chances for Blue. Emerance Maschmeyer (Buderheim, Alta./Harvard University, ECAC) got the start in goal for Yellow and was perfect on eight chances before giving way to Leonoff, who had six saves. The game was the final opportunity for the players in camp to make their case for the final roster; 22 players will be named to Canada’s National Women’s Development Team on Sunday morning.
