PLAYED AT: The Shores Recreation Centre
Date: Nov 7, 2014
GAME NOTES: HOWDEN SCORES OVERTIME WINNER, CANADA WHITE TAKES FIFTH PLACE DAVID BRIEN LAMBTON SHORES, Ont. – Brett Howden (Oakbank, Man./Moose Jaw, WHL) tipped in a Tyson Jost (Kelowna, B.C./Penticton, BCHL) shot 3:16 into overtime, giving Canada White a 3-2 win over Canada Red on Friday night and fifth place at the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. The game was just the second all-Canadian match-up at the tournament, and Canada White won them both in extra time; it earned a 5-4 victory over Canada Black in preliminary round action on Monday. Jonathan Ang (Markham, Ont./Peterborough, OHL) had the other goal for White, which countered a pair of Canada Red goals in the second period with two of its own before the end of the middle frame. Tyler Hylland (Mercier, Que./Blainville-Boisbriand, QMJHL) and Victor Mete (Woodbridge, Ont./London, OHL) found the back of the net for Canada Red. After a scoreless first period, Canada Red was the first to strike on the power play at the 5:08 mark of the second; William Bitten (Gloucester, Ont./Plymouth, OHL) set up behind the White net before finding Hylland, who one-timed a shot past netminder Ryan Kubic (Winnipeg, Man./Vancouver, WHL). Mete doubled the lead 1:40 later, taking a pass from Sean Day (Toronto, Ont./Mississauga, OHL) and letting go a wrist shot that made its way through traffic and beat a screened Kubic. Canada White got on the board just 69 seconds after Mete’s goal; Jordan Kyrou (Toronto, Ont./Sarnia, OHL) sent Ang on a breakaway, and he went high to the glove side on Canada Red goaltender Evan Fitzpatrick (Lower Sackville, N.S./Sherbrooke, QMJHL). White tied the game with 6:30 left in the second period when a shot from Luke Green (Bedford, N.S./Saint John, QMJHL) bounced off the end boards onto the stick of Howden, who beat Fitzpatrick to the short side from a sharp angle. Three Canada White power plays in the third period failed to produce the go-ahead goal, but after Canada Red was called for too many men on the ice early in overtime, Howden made it pay. The game-winner was Canada White’s lone goal in seven opportunities with the man advantage, while Canada Red converted once on a pair of power play chances. Canada White outshot Canada Red 37-24.
