GAME NOTES: HAGUE GETS OVERTIME WINNER, WHITE GETS ALL-CANADIAN WIN JASON LA ROSE SARNIA, Ont. – Nicolas Hague (Kitchener, Ont./Kitchener, GOJHL) scored 3:42 into overtime, giving Canada White a 5-4 victory over Canada Black in an all-Canadian preliminary round match-up Monday night at the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. Just 27 seconds after a White power play had ended in the extra period, Hague took a pass from Brett Howden (Oakbank, Man./Moose Jaw, WHL) and blasted a point shot that went off the post to the glove side of Black goaltender Reilly Pickard (Halifax, N.S./Baie-Comeau, QMJHL) and in for the game-winner. Anthony Salinitri (Windsor, Ont./Sault Ste. Marie, OHL), Travis Barron (Belfountain, Ont./Ottawa, OHL), Tanner Kaspick (Brandon, Man./Brandon, WHL) and Jonathan Ang (Markham, Ont./Peterborough, OHL) had the goals in regulation time for White, which occupies third place in Group A with a 0-1-0-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record through two days. Zach Poirier (Mountain, Ont./North Bay, OHL) scored two goals to lead Black (0-0-1-1), joining Tyler Benson (Edmonton, Alta./Vancouver, WHL) and Pierre-Luc Dubois (Rimouski, Que./Cape Breton, QMJHL) on the scoresheet. Just as he did in Sunday’s loss to Russia, Poirier got the scoring started for Black; he was parked in front to knock in a pass from Nolan Volcan (Edmonton, Alta./Seattle, WHL) at the 7:13 mark of the first period. Benson made it 2-0 at 11:35, snapping a shot off the left wing past White goaltender Ryan Kubic (Winnipeg, Man./Vancouver, WHL), but the opening frame was all White after that. Salinitri got White on the board just 23 seconds after Benson’s goal, Barron banged in a rebound just over two minutes later to tie the game and captain Kaspick gave his team its first lead 1:20 after that to send White to dressing room with the momentum and a 3-2 lead. Ang doubled the advantage early in the second period, poking the 4-2 goal after a shot from Jordan Kyrou (Toronto, Ont./Sarnia, OHL) snuck through Pickard, but Dubois found a loose puck to make it a one-goal game again after 40 minutes. Black got even at 3:42 of the third period when Poirier roofed a shot up and over the glove of Kubic on a partial breakaway, tying the game 4-4 and eventually forcing overtime. White had the advantage in shots on goal, 33-27, and on special teams; it scored twice on four power play opportunities, while Black went without a goal in three tries with the man advantage. Both teams will look to move up the Group A standings in Tuesday’s preliminary round finales; White takes on Russia at the RBC Centre (7 p.m. ET), while Black visits Sarnia Arena to face Finland (7 p.m. ET).
