GAME NOTES: MASCHMEYER SHUTS OUT FINLAND AT 4 NATIONS CUP WENDY GRAVES JÄRVENPÄÄ, Finland – Emerance Maschmeyer (Bruderheim, Alta./Calgary, CWHL) made 18 saves and Canada’s National Women’s Team shut out Finland 3-0 in its opening game of the 2016 4 Nations Cup. It was Maschmeyer’s fourth shutout with the National Women’s Team in 10 career games. Rebecca Johnston (Sudbury, Ont./Calgary, CWHL), Brigette Lacquette (Mallard, Man./Brampton, CWHL) and Natalie Spooner (Scarborough, Ont./Toronto, CWHL) scored. Johnston also added an assist in the win. Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, Que./Montreal, CWHL) had two helpers, and Laura Fortino (Hamilton, Ont./Brampton, CWHL), Laura Stacey (Kleinburg, Ont./Brampton, CWHL) – in her debut with the National Women’s Team – and Brianne Jenner (Oakville, Ont./Calgary, CWHL) had one each. Canada has never lost to Finland at the 4 Nations Cup, a streak that now stretches 28 games back to 1996. Forty-eight hours after meeting in a pre-competition game, the two sides were at it again. And much like the first time, Canada took an early lead. A little more than three minutes in on the rush, Johnston scored with a backhand tip on a centering pass from Poulin. Canada doubled its lead later in the period when Lacquette’s shot from just outside the circle went off the post and in. In picking up an assist on the goal, Stacey recorded her first point with the national team. After neither team could score in the second, Finland came out pressing to start the third. Maschmeyer was tested early and forced to make a good kick save in the opening minutes to keep her clean sheet intact. Her team gave her some more breathing room moments later. Amid a body of players in a scramble in front of the net, Spooner found the back of the net. A pair of penalties to Finland early in the third gave Canada two full minutes on a two-man advantage, but the team was unable to convert. Canada finished 0/6 on the power play. The Canadians outshot the Finns 35-18 on the game. Noora Räty took the loss. Canada next plays on Wednesday when it faces off against Sweden (12:30 p.m. ET/9:30 a.m. PT).
