GAME NOTES: FALLOON’S OVERTIME WINNER SENDS TERRIERS TO RBC CUP SEMIFINALS JASON LA ROSE VERNON, B.C. – Derek Falloon scored 2:40 into overtime, giving the Yorkton Terriers a 2-1 win over the Dauphin Kings on Thursday afternoon and sending the Terriers to Saturday’s semifinals at the 2014 RBC Cup. Yorkton won its second do-or-die game in 24 hours to ensure it’ll play on the weekend for the fifth time in as many appearances at Canada’s National Junior A Championship. Falloon jammed a loose puck through Dauphin goaltender Michael Stiliadis after a centering feed from Brett Boehm for his first goal of the tournament in just his second game – he missed Yorkton’s first two with an injury suffered at the Western Canada Cup. Tyler Giebel had the other goal for Yorkton (2-2), which trailed 1-0 entering the third period and was outshot 36-33 by the Kings, but found a way to win. Brent Wold was the lone goal-scorer for Dauphin (3-1), which lost for the first time. The defeat doesn’t hurt the Kings, who clinched first place on Tuesday night. Dauphin held an 11-9 edge in shots on goal in the first period, but it took until the 46-second mark of the second for the Kings to open the scoring. With Dauphin enjoying the man advantage, Dylan Butler’s shot was redirected by Wold, who was parked at the top of the Yorkton crease in front of netminder Kale Thomson. Stiliadis and Thomson were the story in the middle frame; the two teams combined for 27 shots – 16-11 Dauphin – but Wold’s goal was the lone marker of the period. With the Terriers’ season on the line, Giebel tied the game eight minutes into the third period; cutting into the middle of the ice from Stiliadis’ left, his backhand found its way through the Kings’ goaltender to make it 1-1. Yorkton continued to press for the go-ahead goal, outshooting Dauphin 12-7 in the final period, but 60 minutes wouldn’t be enough to decide a winner, setting up Falloon’s heroics. It is the third time in 18 days the Terriers have beaten the Kings; Yorkton topped Dauphin 8-6 in the preliminary round at the Western Canada Cup, and earned a 5-4 victory in the regional final. Both teams will wait for Thursday’s preliminary round finale between Toronto Lakeshore and Vernon to find out who they face Saturday. A Patriots win in that game would set up a Dauphin-Yorkton rematch in the semifinals.
