Game Report 558 National Jr A Championship
PLAYED AT: Kal Tire Place
Date: May 11, 2014
GAME NOTES: WOLD’S WINNER LEADS KINGS PAST CANADIANS IN OVERTIME VERNON, B.C. – Brent Wold was the overtime hero, scoring at 8:37 of the extra period to give the Dauphin Kings a 4-3 win over the Carleton Place Canadians on Sunday night at the 2014 RBC Cup. The victory leaves Dauphin (2-0) as the last team without a loss at Canada’s National Junior A Championship. Wold stripped the puck from a Carleton Place defenceman at the side of the Canadians’ goal, stepped out in front and snuck a backhand past goaltender Guillaume Therien to cap a back-and-forth game. Wold is no stranger to the RBC Cup; he is making his third appearance at the national championship in the last four years, having played at the 2011 and 2012 tournaments with the Portage Terriers. Jesse Bernard scored twice and Dylan Butler added one for Dauphin, which scored all three of its goals in regulation time on the power play. Tanner Butler had two assists in the win. Vinny Post, Stephen Baylis and Stephen Cooney had the goals for Carleton Place (1-1). Despite being outshot 14-9 in the first period it was the Kings who had the lone goal of the opening frame; Bernard ripped a slap shot from face-off dot past Therien for a 1-0 lead through 20 minutes. But Carleton Place answered early in the second thanks to Post, who took a pass from behind the net from Brett D’Andrea and beat Dauphin netminder Michael Stiliadis for his second goal of the tournament, tying the game. Both teams upped the offence in the third period, combining for three goals in less than four minutes. Baylis finished a spectacular individual effort while shorthanded to give the Canadians their first lead at 4:55, but Bernard answered on the same four-minute power play with a carbon copy of his first goal to draw Dauphin even at 6:18. Butler then restored the Kings’ lead late in the second half of the double minor, snapping a shot through traffic and past Therien at 8:53. But the Canadians equalized at 12:05 off the stick of Cooney, who stepped into the Dauphin zone and wired a wrist shot over the shoulder of Stiliadis to eventually force overtime. Dauphin carried the play in the extra period, outshooting Carleton Place 9-4, and 35-34 overall. Both teams are off Monday, and return to the ice at Kal Tire Place on Tuesday; the Kings try to stay perfect when they face the host Vernon Vipers in the night cap (7 p.m. PT), while the Canadians meet the Toronto Lakeshore Patriots in an all-Ontario early game (2 p.m. PT).
