MARIE, Ont. – Jacob Ingham (Barrie, Ont./Mississauga, OHL) stopped 29 of the 30 shots he faced, backstopping Canada Black into the semifinals at the 2016 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge with a 3-1 quarter-final win over Finland on Thursday night. The Canadians will face Russia in the second semifinal on Friday (7:30 p.m. ET) at the Essar Centre. Luka Burzan (Surrey, B.C./Moose Jaw, WHL), Dawson Baker (Baltimore, Ont./Trenton, OJHL) and Aidan Dudas (Parry Sound, Ont./Owen Sound, OHL) had the goals for Black, which has won three in a row after a tournament-opening loss to Canada White last Sunday. Both teams came out firing in the first period, combining for 21 shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes, but it took until the 12:34 mark for Burzan to open the scoring, circling around the net before knocking his shot past Finnish netminder Justus Annunen. Baker made it 2-0 just over five minutes later, jamming a loose puck past Annunen from the side of the net after a shot from Giovanni Vallati (Ottawa, Ont./Kitchener, OHL) rattled around in the Finnish crease. Black didn’t sit back on its two-goal lead in the second period, racking up 18 shots on Annunen in the middle frame, but it took until the final minute of the period for a third Canadian goal. After a turnover in the Black zone, Dudas raced away, leaving the puck for Adam McMaster (Beamsville, Ont./North Bay, OHL) before driving to the net for the return pass and beating Annunen with just 40 seconds remaining in the stanza. The Finns tried their best to get back into the game in the third period, outshooting Black 11-6, but they could only get one puck behind Ingham, and it took Niklas Nordgren until the 16:01 mark of the final frame. The loss means Finland will play for seventh place on Friday; it will travel to the John Rhodes Community Centre to take on the Czech Republic (6 p.m. ET) in its tournament finale.
