Game Report 3161 NJT Selection Camp
PLAYED AT: Westerner Park Centrium
Date: Nov 22, 2020
GAME NOTES: TRIO LEADS WHITE TO SECOND INTRASQUAD WIN AT SELECTION CAMP JASON LA ROSE RED DEER, Alta. – Kirby Dach (Fort Saskatchewan, Alta./Chicago, NHL), Philip Tomasino (Mississauga, Ont./Oshawa, OHL) and Connor Zary (Saskatoon, Sask./Kamloops, WHL) combined for nine points to help White past Red 6-3 on Sunday night at Canada’s National Junior Team Sport Chek Selection Camp. Dach scored twice and added an assist, and Tomasino and Zary had a goal and two helpers apiece for White, which won for the second night in a row; it opened game action at camp with a 4-2 victory Saturday. Seth Jarvis (Winnipeg, Man./Portland, WHL) and Graeme Clarke (Nepean, Ont./Ottawa, OHL) also scored for White, which got 27 saves from Brett Brochu (Tilbury, Ont./London, OHL). Dach wasted no time getting his team on the board, pulling a loose puck out of a scramble in front and beating Red goaltender Taylor Gauthier (Calgary, Alta./Prince George, WHL) just 2:38 in. Brochu was terrific in the first period, turning aside all 10 shots he faced as Red out-chanced White in the opening 20 minutes. Red had a goal called back late in the opening frame after it was determined Quinton Byfield (Newmarket, Ont./Sudbury, OHL) kicked a rebound past Brochu. The game opened up early in the second period and the offence came fast and furious; the teams combined for four goals in a span of 5:33, three of them coming from White. Tomasino doubled the lead at 3:05, jumping on a rebound after Dach’s spin-o-rama shot hit the side of the net. Jamieson Rees (Hamilton, Ont./Sarnia, OHL) got Red on the board at 7:18, burying a second-chance effort on the backhand after Brochu stopped a long-range point shot from Kaiden Guhle (Sherwood Park, Alta./Prince Albert, WHL), but Dach one-timed a quick feed from Tomasino past Gauthier just 33 seconds later to restore the two-goal advantage. Jarvis made it 4-1 only 47 ticks after that, finishing a pretty cross-crease feed from Dylan Cozens (Whitehorse, Y.T./Lethbridge, WHL). Red found its game in the early minutes of the third period, striking twice in less than 40 seconds to cut its three-goal deficit to one. Rees got his second of the game at 2:02, tapping in a set-up from Bowen Byram (Cranbrook, B.C./Vancouver, WHL) after the defenceman stickhandled his way into the slot, and Jack Quinn (Cobden, Ont./Ottawa, OHL) cruised through the middle of the ice to hammer in a feed from Ryan Suzuki (London, Ont./Saginaw, OHL) only 36 seconds later to make it a 4-3 game. But Brochu was perfect from there, finishing with 13 stops in the final stanza, and Clarke and Zary both found the empty net in the final minute to provide the final margin of victory. The teams finished even in shots on goal, 30-30. The three-game intrasquad set comes to a close Tuesday (12 p.m. ET/9 a.m. PT) at the Westerner Park Centrium.
