| PLAYED AT: Olympic Center – 1980 Rink Date: Aug 17, 2019 GAME NOTES: WOMEN'S DEV TEAM EDGES U.S. IN SERIES FINALE QUINTON AMUNDSON LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – Sarah Fillier (Georgetown, Ont./Princeton University, ECAC) scored twice in the first period and Kendra Woodland (Kamloops, B.C./University of New Brunswick, AUS) made 27 saves to guide Canada’s National Women’s Development Team to a 2-1 victory over the United States on Saturday to close out the three-game series. Emma Maltais (Burlington, Ont./Ohio State University, WCHA) helped set up both goals with face-off wins for Canada, which recorded its first win of the series. After withstanding consistent pressure by the Americans in the opening five minutes, Canada pushed back and was rewarded with Fillier’s markers before the game was 10 minutes old. She struck for the first time at 7:06 with a snap shot from the bottom of the right face-off circle, and struck again 75 seconds later by dangling into the slot and blasting a shot through the five-hole of U.S. goaltender Aerin Frankel. Prime offensive chances were few and far between for both clubs early in the middle frame, but the U.S. held a 10-7 edge in shots and struck for a power-play goal by Emily Brown with less than five minutes left in the period. Canada’s urgency to earn the victory was evident early in the third period as it recorded multiple attempts to extend its lead with a string of strong forechecking sequences. The United States punched back with strong shifts of its own, including a sequence midway through the stanza where Woodland was forced to make several point-blank pad saves in rapid-fire fashion, but the Americans couldn’t find the equalizer. The U.S. outshot Canada 9-6 in the third period and 28-20 overall. |
