GAME NOTES: CANADA FALLS IN OT IN DEV SERIES OPENER JASON LA ROSE LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – Sophie Shirley (Saskatoon, Sask./University of Wisconsin, WCHA) and Kristin O’Neill (Oakville, Ont./Cornell University, ECAC) scored in the final six minutes to force overtime, but Canada’s National Women’s Development Team fell a goal short in a 4-3 extra-time loss to the United States on Wednesday night in the first of three games between the teams. Claire Thompson (Toronto, Ont./Princeton University, ECAC) had the other goal for the Canadians, who finished with a 31-26 edge in shots on goal. With time ticking away and Canada down by a pair of goals, Shirley took the puck hard down the left wing and drove to the net before tucking the puck past U.S. goaltender Emma Polusny. O’Neill completed the comeback with 1:27 remaining, circling out of the corner and into the slot before wiring a shot over the glove of Polusny. The Canadians went down a goal early when Grace Zumwinkle ripped a slap shot past Canadian netminder Kendra Woodland (Kamloops, B.C./University of New Brunswick, AUS) for a power-play goal at 8:39, but Thompson snuck a shot through Polusny from a sharp angle just three minutes later to tie the game. Taylor Heise restored the American lead early in the second period, beating Woodland with a quick shot from the top of the face-off circle. That was the lone goal in the middle frame despite Canada holding a decisive 15-4 advantage in shots. Natalie Snodgrass extended the advantage for the U.S. midway through the third period, burying a feed from behind the net Zumwinkle to seemingly put the Americans in charge before Canada rallied late. A tripping call in overtime doomed the Canadians, and Hannah Bilka rifled a shot short-side on Woodland for a man-advantage marker in the extra period to win it for the U.S. The teams are back on the ice at Herb Brooks Arena on Thursday night (7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT) before closing out the series with a Saturday evening tilt (7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT).
