GAME NOTES: TRUTER SCORES TWICE TO LEAD DURHAM WEST TO BRONZE MEDAL LEE BOYADJIAN MORDEN, Man. – Chavonne Truter scored twice, including the game-winner, and added an assist as the Durham West Lighting claimed a 4-1 victory over the Pembina Valley Hawks in the 2017 Esso Cup bronze medal game Saturday afternoon. Truter said she was nervous going into the third period, with the game tied 1-1. But the team spent the intermission sharing words of encouragement to calm the nerves. “We can do this, we were all over them, beating them in shots, we just had to bury our chances,” Truter said. Breaking away from the wing and into the slot, Truter took a shot off her front foot, sending the puck to the side of the net Halle Oswald had just vacated. That goal made it 2-1 for the Lightning and gave Durham West the momentum. Eight minutes later, Truter was at it again. This time the play was started by Brooklyn Donaldson, who was set up near the corner of the Hawks’ end. Truter snuck into the slot and was all alone when Donaldson sent her the pass. An one-timer ended up as a knuckle puck and floated over Oswald, adding some insurance for the Lightning. “Everyone took a deep breath [and] just played defensive, to make sure no one got in our zone,” Truter said. The plan worked so well Mackenzie MacDonald scored on a breakaway for Durham West with just over five-and-a-half minutes left in the third, to secure the win. “It’s been amazing,” MacDonald said of her time in Morden. “Just to be here it’s just like … a dream come true.” “I’m ecstatic, this has been an amazing year, winning the gold at provincials and then getting a bronze here at the national championship,” said Pat Teggart, Durham West head coach. “It’s been long road from August until now and it’s my best year I’ve ever had in minor hockey. Only the gold medal game remains at the 2017 Esso Cup. The Harfangs du Triolet and St. Albert Slash will meet in the championship game Saturday evening. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. CT and can be seen live on TSN across the network.
