GAME NOTES: DREVER POSTS SHUTOUT AS SLASH BLANK WILDCATS LEE BOYADJIAN MORDEN, Man. – Camryn Drever stopped all 23 shots she faced to earn the shutout, leading the St. Albert Slash to a 6-0 win over the Mid-Isle Wildcats in the opening game for both Sunday at the 2017 Esso Cup. Madison Willan scored once added two assists to pace the offence for St. Albert, which got goals from six different players – three in the first period, and three more in the third. The Slash needed just 45 seconds to open the scoring when Kaylee Vader came flying down the wing and buried the first shot on Wildcats goaltender Maggie Johnston. Less than three minutes later, Willan fed Tyra Meropoulis, who used a defenceman as a screen to go high glove side on Johnston. The rush of goals continued, when nine seconds after Meropoulis’ marker, Isabelle Lajoie found the back of the net to put St. Albert ahead 3-0. But by the end of the first, the Wildcats had pulled ahead in shots 8-7, only being kept at bay by some stellar saves by Drever. In the second period, both teams found themselves heading to the penalty box. Mid-Isle was on the penalty kill for most of the first five minutes, while St. Albert took four penalties throughout the rest of the frame. But both sides showed excellent penalty-kill units, supported heavily by the play of Johnston and Drever. The early part of the third period resembled the first, with the Slash tallying a pair of goals in rapid succession. Stephanie Markowski found an open lane, breaking past the Wildcat defenders to go high glove on Johnston. Less than a minute later, Willan assisted on another goal by a defenceman, with Taylor Anker making it 5-0. Willan scored the final goal, whipping one home from the low slot with just over five minutes to go. The Wildcats had a chance late when Keiran Andrews found herself alone on a break, but at the end of the long shift she couldn’t beat Drever. The Slash goaltender made nine of her 23 saves in the third period to finish the shutout. Mid-Isle is back in action Monday at 12 p.m. CT against the Harfangs du Triolet, while the Slash face the host Pembina Valley Hawks in the Day 2 finale at 7 p.m. CT.
