Game Report 2355 IIHF Women's World Championship
PLAYED AT: Metro Areena
Date: Apr 14, 2019
GAME NOTES: CANADA WINS BRONZE AT WOMEN’S WORLDS JASON LA ROSE ESPOO, Finland – Loren Gabel (Kitchener, Ont./Clarkson University, ECAC) scored a pair of goals to lead a balanced offence, and Canada’s National Women’s Team earned bronze at the 2019 IIHF Women’s World Championship with a 7-0 win over Russia on Sunday. The Canadians have medalled at all 19 women’s worlds – 10 gold, eight silver and one bronze. Seven different players finished with multi-point performances, and 11 put their names on the scoresheet. Rebecca Johnston (Sudbury, Ont./Calgary, CWHL), Natalie Spooner (Scarborough, Ont./Toronto, CWHL), Erin Ambrose (Keswick, Ont./Montreal, CWHL) and Jamie Lee Rattray (Kanata, Ont./Markham, CWHL) had a goal and an assist each, while Renata Fast (Burlington, Ont./Toronto, CWHL) and Sarah Nurse (Hamilton, Ont./Toronto, CWHL) contributed two helpers apiece. Geneviève Lacasse (Kingston, Ont./Montreal, CWHL) made six saves to record the shutout. Spooner was first on the board, beating Russian goaltender Nadezhda Morozova with a wraparound at 6:08, and Bourbonnais hammered home a slap shot at 15:31 to send the Canadians to the dressing room up 2-0. Canada held the Russians without a shot in the second period, but could only get one of their 12 past Morozova; Johnston took a short pass from Nurse and went five-hole midway through the middle frame. The floodgates opened in the third, starting with Gabel taking advantage of a miscue by Morozova to slip home the 4-0 goal just past the four-minute mark. A shot from Ambrose banked off the leg of Rattray and in at 8:13, and Ambrose gathered in a loose puck and went upstairs on Morozova at 14:21 to stretch the lead to six. Gabel capped the scoring in style just 49 seconds later, racing in on a breakaway and wiring in her sixth of the tournament. She finished tied with Spooner for the team lead, and just one back of U.S. forward Hilary Knight for most in the tournament. Spooner was Canada’s top scorer with 10 points, one ahead of Brianne Jenner (Oakville, Ont./Calgary, CWHL) and two up on Nurse.
