GAME NOTES: CANADA BLANKS GERMANS, BOOKS SEMIFINAL SPOT AT WORLDS JASON LA ROSE ESPOO, Finland – Blayre Turnbull (Stellarton, N.S./Calgary, CWHL) opened and closed the scoring, sending Canada’s National Women’s Team into the final four at the 2019 IIHF Women’s World Championship with a 5-0 quarter-final over Germany on Thursday. The Canadians will face either Finland or the Czech Republic in the semifinals on Saturday (time TBD). Brianne Jenner (Oakville, Ont./Calgary, CWHL) added a goal and assist, and Laura Stacey (Kleinburg, Ont./Markham, CWHL) and Natalie Spooner (Scarborough, Ont./Toronto, CWHL) also scored for Canada, which racked up 66 shots in the win. Emerance Maschmeyer (Bruderheim, Alta./Montreal, CWHL) was rarely tested in the Canadian goal, needing to make just nine saves to record the shutout. Canada directed 18 shots at German netminder Jennifer Harss in the first period, but only one found its way in; Turnbull drove the net off the left wing and went low to the far side for a 1-0 Canadian lead. Jenner doubled the advantage seven minutes into the second period, redirecting a feed from Sarah Nurse (Hamilton, Ont./Toronto, CWHL) through the legs of Harss on the power play, and Stacey jumped on a rebound 2:24 later to make it 3-0. The Canadians were in complete control in the second period, outshooting Germany 29-3. Spooner got her fifth of the tournament on the power play early in the third period, tipping in a Brigette Lacquette (Mallard, Man./Calgary, CWHL) shot. It leaves her tied with American forwards Hilary Knight and Kendall Coyne Schofield for the tournament lead. Turnbull capped the offensive festivities with eight-and-a-half minutes left, getting a piece of a Mélodie Daoust (Valleyfield, Que./Montreal, CWHL) shot on another man advantage. Canada improved to 7-0 all-time against Germany – including 5-0 at women’s worlds – and still has yet to allow a goal. It has outscored the Germans 71-0 overall.
