GAME NOTES: HOLTZ GETS SHOOTOUT WINNER TO LEAD SWEDES PAST FINLAND
JASON LA ROSE
PENHOLD, Alta. – Alexander Holtz scored the lone goal in the second round of the shootout, sending Sweden past Finland 4-3 in pre-tournament action Saturday afternoon ahead of the 2018 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.
After a back-and-forth third period and scoreless overtime, Swedish goaltender Jesper Wallstedt turned away Patrik Puistola, Anton Lundell and Kasper Simontaival in the shootout, allowing Holtz’s goal to stand up as the winner.
Lucas Raymond scored twice in regulation for the Swedes, including the game-tying goal with just 2:40 remaining. Philip Broberg also found the back of the net for the Tre Kronor.
Roope Taponen was the story for the Finns; the goaltender made 19 saves in the first period alone to keep the game scoreless, and finished with 37 saves in a terrific performance.
The Swedes are off to Edmonton to start the Hlinka Gretzky Cup against Slovakia on Monday afternoon (3 p.m. MT), while Finland meets Russia in its prelim opener in Red Deer (3 p.m. MT). |
