PLAYED AT: BLZ Arena Date: Jan 6, 2018 GAME NOTES: POTOMAK SCORES TWICE, CANADA GETS FIFTH AT NATIONA CUP JASON LA ROSE FÜSSEN, Germany – Amy Potomak (Aldergrove, B.C.) scored twice in a three-goal second period, and Canada’s National Women’s Development Team closed out the 2018 Nations Cup with a 5-1 win over Germany in the fifth-place game Saturday. The Canadians never led in a pair of narrow losses during the preliminary round, but needed just over two minutes to jump ahead against the hosts; Kristin O’Neill (Oakville, Ont./Cornell University, ECAC) finished a set-up from Lindsay Agnew (Oakville, Ont./University of Minnesota, WCHA) at 2:21 for a 1-0 advantage. Brooke Stacey (Kahnawake, Que./University of Maine, HE) doubled the advantage just 65 seconds into the second period, and Potomak scored her first 1:22 after that to put Canada in control up 3-0. The Germans got one back and looked to take momentum into the third period when Julia Zorn beat Canadian goaltender Marlene Boissonnault (Dundee, N.B./Cornell University, ECAC) with 27 seconds left in the middle frame, but Potomak needed only nine seconds to restore the three-goal advantage after 40 minutes. Loren Gabel (Kitchener, Ont./Clarkson University, ECAC) capped the scoring with five-and-a-half minutes to go in the third period, netting her second goal of the tournament. Potomak finished as top scorer for the Canadians with two goals and two assists in three games, sitting two points ahead of Gabel, Victoria Bach (Milton, Ont./Boston University, HE) and Hannah Miller (North Vancouver, B.C./St. Lawrence University, ECAC).
