GAME NOTES: JUNIORS SPREAD AROUND SCORING IN CAMP-CLOSING WIN JASON LA ROSE ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - Alex Formenton (King City, Ont./London, OHL) scored the game-winning goal late in the second period, and the Team Canada hopefuls finished up Canada's National Junior Team Sport Chek Selection Camp with a 5-2 win over Denmark on Friday afternoon. Thirteen players recorded at least a point for the Canadians, who outshot the Danes by a one-sided 52-14 margin, including 41-10 over the final 40 minutes. Canada got the scoring started early on the power play, with Boris Katchouk (Waterloo, Ont./Sault Ste. Marie, OHL) knocking in a loose puck from in close to make it 1-0. The lead lasted less than five minutes, though, as Joachim Blichfeld found space upstairs on Colton Point (North Bay, Ont./Colgate University, ECAC) to pull the Danes even after 20 minutes. The Canadians dominated the second period, and retook the lead when Brett Howden (Oakbank, Man./Moose Jaw, WHL) got a shot past Danish goaltender Emil Gransøe just shy of the eight-minute mark of the middle frame. Formenton knocked in the rebound of a Cal Foote (Kelowna, B.C./Kelowna, WHL) shot at the 17:01 mark of the second, sending Canada to the intermission up by a pair of goals. The Danes pulled back within a goal when Phillip Schultz beat netminder Michael DiPietro (Amherstburg, Ont./Windsor, OHL) just 33 seconds after the puck dropped to start the third period, but that would be it for offence from the Scandinavians, Tyler Steenbergen (Sylvan Lake, Alta./Swift Current, WHL) finished off a tic-tac-toe passing play with Drake Batherson (New Minas, N.S./Cape Breton, QMJHL) and Sam Steel (Sherwood Park, Alta./Regina, WHL) to make it 4-1 at 7:23, and Jordan Kyrou (Toronto, Ont./Sarnia, OHL) ripped a one-timer past Mads Søgaard with 2:41 left to finish the festivities. With camp done, the final 22-player roster for Canada's National Junior Team will be revealed Friday night. Following a pair of pre-tournament games in London, Ont. (Dec. 20) and Hamilton, Ont. (Dec. 22), Canada opens the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship on Boxing Day when it takes on Finland in Buffalo, N.Y.
