GAME NOTES: FIVE POINTS FROM FARMER HELP U.S. BLANK ITALY
JASON LA ROSE
CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Declan Farmer scored a hat trick as part of a five-point performance, helping the United States to a 10-0 win over Italy on Monday afternoon at the 2017 World Sledge Hockey Challenge.
Farmer, who has led the tournament in scoring in each of the last two years, has nine points in his first two games – both American victories. The U.S. has scored 18 times so far, allowing just 13 shots on goal in wins over Korea and the Italians.
The offence came fast and furious for the U.S. in the first period; Farmer circled out of the corner before snapping a shot upstairs on goaltender Gabriele Araudo less than two minutes in to start the scoring, and helped set up Jack Wallace for the 2-0 goal at 6:41.
Brody Roybal made good on a U.S. power play at 7:49, going far side on Araudo with his left hand, Wallace added his second at 10:51 and Noah Grove finished a feed from Wallace in the final minute to put the Americans in full control early.
Wallace had two goals and two assists in the opening 15 minutes, becoming just the fifth player in tournament history to record at least four points in one period.
Farmer owned the second period, scoring early and late to finish his hat trick. The goals were sandwiched around one from Kevin McKee, who roofed the seventh American marker past Araudo at 4:27.
Santino Stillitano replaced Araudo in the Italian goal to start the third period.
Roybal added his second of the game six minutes into the final stanza, going end to end before tucking a shot past Stillitano, before Rico Roman converted on another man advantage with just over a minute to go.
The U.S. will attempt to complete a fourth-consecutive perfect preliminary round when it faces Canada in the round-robin finale Wednesday (7 p.m. AT), right after Italy takes on Korea (12 p.m. AT). |
