Game Report 1535 Spengler Cup
PLAYED AT: Vaillant Arena
Date: Dec 28, 2015
GAME NOTES: GLASS GETS SHUTOUT, SENDS CANADA TO SPENGLER CUP SEMIS JASON LA ROSE DAVOS, Switzerland – Jeff Glass (Calgary, Alta./Dinamo Minsk, KHL) stopped all 21 shots he faced to record the shutout, leading Canada’s National Men’s Team to a 2-0 win over HC Davos on Monday in the preliminary round finale at the 2015 Spengler Cup. The victory leaves Canada as the lone undefeated team at the tournament, clinches first place in the Cattini Group, and means a bye through to Wednesday’s semifinals (9 a.m. ET/6 a.m. PT on TSN5). The Canadians will face the winner of the HC Davos-Jokerit Helsinki quarter-final, scheduled for Tuesday. Neither team found the back of the net in a goalless, penalty-free first period, but Canada struck quickly in the second; captain Matthew Lombardi (Montreal, Que./Genève-Servette HC, SUI) found Alexandre Giroux (Quebec City, Que./HC Ambri-Piotta, SUI), who rifled a shot over the short-side shoulder of Davos goaltender Leonardo Genoni just 5:35 into the middle frame. Chris DiDomenico (Woodbridge, Ont./SCL Tigers, SUI) doubled the lead just past the midway mark of the period, taking a no-look feed from Tom Pyatt (Thunder Bay, Ont./Genève-Servette HC, SUI) from behind the net and going five-hole on Genoni. The Canadians dominated the second period, outshooting the tournament hosts 19-3. Glass kept Davos at bay in the third period, including a pair of power-play opportunities, to record just the seventh shutout ever by a Canadian goaltender at the tournament, and first since Devan Dubnyk stopped 25 shots to blank Davos 5-0 in the 2012 preliminary round. Canada finished with a one-sided 42-21 advantage in shots on goal. The teams have met in the preliminary round every year since 1993, when HC Davos returned to the tournament; overall, Canada has a 20-9 advantage in round-robin meetings (since 1984), along with a 5-3 mark in championship games.
