Game Report 1511 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship
PLAYED AT: Meridian Centre
Date: Jan 9, 2016
GAME NOTES: CANADA BLANKS CZECHS AT U18 WOMEN’S WORLDS WENDY GRAVES ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – Lindsay Agnew (Oakville, Ont./Mississauga, PWHL), Amy Potomak (Aldergrove, B.C./Pursuit of Excellence, CSSHL) and Kristin O’Neill (Oakville, Ont./Stoney Creek, PWHL) each had two goals and an assist – and 13 players in total put up points – as Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team shut out the Czech Republic 11-0 at the 2016 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship. Daryl Watts (Toronto, Ont./Mississauga, PWHL) and Ashton Bell (Deloraine, Man./Westman, MFMHL) also had multipoint nights, with two assists each, as Canada improved its all-time record to 3-0 against the Czech Republic at the U18 women’s worlds. The Czechs held their own against the Canadians through the first 18 minutes. Things then turned quickly. Two minutes, 54 seconds. Five goals. Through the closing minutes of the first period and the opening moments of the second, Canada knocked 3:10 off the previous record of fastest five goals scored by one team. On its first power play opportunity of the game, Canada won the face-off and never left the offensive zone. With only one second left on the man-advantage, Agnew walked in from the corner and scored from the bottom of the face-off circle. Goals 22 seconds apart from Sheridan Oswald (MacGregor, Man./Central Plains, MFMHL) – from the top of the crease – and Potomak – far side after skating in from the corner – in the last minute of the first made it 3-0. A pair of passes from the goal line to the front of the net – Bell to O’Neill; Watts to Potomak – made it 5-0 only 1:01 into the second period. After Sophie Shirley (Saskatoon, Sask./Notre Dame, JWHL) scored from the top of the crease, Katerina Zechovska replaced Denisa Jandova in the Czech net. It was the second night in a row Canada had chased a goalie from the crease. Canada continued to find the back of the net anyway. Jaime Bourbonnais’s (Mississauga, Ont./Oakville, PWHL) shot from just inside the blue line weaved through traffic and in. Annie Berg (Beamsville, Ont./Cambridge, PWHL) tipped in a pass from Emma Maltais (Burlington, Ont./Oakville, PWHL) 2:45 later. Agnew went high glove side and O’Neill blocker side 15 seconds apart in the final seconds of the period to make it 10-0 after 40 minutes. Malia Schneider’s (Millarville, Alta./Pursuit of Excellence, CSSHL) shot through traffic midway through the third wrapped up the scoring. Édith D’Astous-Moreau (Laval, Que./Stanstead, CAHS) made 13 saves for the shutout.
