Game Report 1312 National Women's U18 Championship
PLAYED AT: Canada Summit Centre
Date: Nov 5, 2015
GAME NOTES: LASIS EARNS SHUTOUT, ONTARIO BLUE GETS SECOND WIN WENDY GRAVES HUNTSVILLE, Ont. – The game had plenty of action, just not a whole lot of goals. In the end Celine Frappier (Tecumseh, Ont./Toronto, PWHL) provided the offence – scoring the only goal of the game – and Carmen Lasis (Toronto, Ont./Mississauga, PWHL) provided the defence – stopping all 21 shots she saw – as Ontario Blue shut out Alberta 1-0 to wrap up Day 2 of the 2015 National Women’s Under-18 Championship. On its second power play of the game, Ontario Blue spent more than a minute buzzing in the Alberta end of the ice, moving the puck all around the offensive zone and tiring the defenders out. After receiving the puck, Frappier was given room to move down through the face-off circle and shoot uncontested. Her shot just got through short side. Devon Facchinato (Windsor, Ont./Oakville, PWHL) and Brooke Jovanovich (Oakville, Ont./Oakville, PWHL) provided the assists. Kirsten Chamberlin (Cochrane, Alta./Edge School, CSSHL) made 17 saves for Alberta. The all-time head-to-head record between the two seemingly evenly matched teams now stands, appropriately, even, with each side having three wins. Alberta had its chances to write a different story. In the first period it enjoyed 1:35 of five-on-three. In the second period, on the same early power play, Malia Schneider (Millarville, Alta./Pursuit of Excellence, CSSHL) was left alone to line up a shot from the face-off dot but sent the puck squarely at Lasis, and Amanda McLeod (Okotoks, Alta./Edge School, CSSHL) hit the post while standing at the side of the net. Both teams’ special teams were tested, with the penalty kill units outperforming its power play counterparts. Ontario Blue finished 1 for 5, Alberta 0 for 6. Alberta pulled Chamberlin with 1:27 to play in the third, but a body checking minor to Tyra Meropoulis (Edson, Alta./Parkland Athletic Club, AMMFHL) negated the advantage. Ontario Blue now stands alone atop Group B with two regulation wins. It finishes its preliminary round on Friday against British Columbia (4:30 p.m. ET/1:30 p.m. ET). Alberta now sits alone at the bottom of Group B with two regulation losses. It plays its final preliminary round game on Friday against Atlantic (1:30 p.m. ET/10:30 a.m. PT).
