GAME NOTES: U.S. PICKS UP SECOND SHUTOUT WIN
WENDY GRAVES
CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – The line of Declan Farmer, Brody Roybal and Kevin McKee combined to score six goals and the United States shut out Norway 8-0 for its second win at the 2016 World Sledge Hockey Challenge.
The Americans have yet to allow a goal in the tournament.
Rico Roman and Adam Page also scored.
Bo Reichenbach picked up the win in net. Kissinger Deng and Kjell Christian Hamar split time in goal for Norway.
The United States outshot Norway 27-3.
About 600 schoolkids took in the day’s first game, and they were treated to plenty of offence from the Americans.
Five minutes in Farmer took a pass from Josh Pauls at the blue-line, maneuvered through a pair of defenders and finished high to open the scoring.
Thirty seconds later McKee picked up a loose puck below the left circle, drove around the net and, with Deng tangled up with his teammate, easily slid the puck in for a 2-0 lead.
The Americans scored a couple more quick ones before the opening 15 was over.
Farmer finished off a pass from Roybal at the 11:01 mark. Less than a minute later, from below the goal line, Tyler Carron sent a centering pass to Roman, who went high on Deng to make it 4-0.
Norway iced only 11 skaters for the second straight day. The team played the late game yesterday and the quick turnaround for Monday’s early start did it no favours. The team didn’t register its first shot on net until the 3:08 mark of the second period.
The Americans outshot the Norwegians 8-1 in the period, but only one found the back of the net. Roybal’s centering pass was easily tipped in by McKee for his second goal of the game.
The team scored three more goals early in the third period. Roybal went short side from the right face-off circle only 24 seconds into the period. He did the same 3:26 later to make it 7-0. Less than two minutes after that Page scored from the bottom of the left circle. |
